Whilst I agree with much of what Roger Cohen has to say on this topic, I do not think it is a good idea to try to encapsulate the horrors of Nazi Germany to that country and that historical period alone.

Humans have been killing each other too many a century to seriously believe things are any different now.

It took just half a decade to get a failed minority party into an organization of thousands getting trained for mass murderers. In the age of the Internet it may take far shorter a time than that.
